Rose on pillow

Had a day off work today and thought I'd spend a few hours on another Freud(ish) experiment...Having been SO impressed at the speed with which Sue is producing her artweeks work, i thought I'd have ago at painting something in one sitting and here it is. The picture is only 6" x 8", I've TRIED not to overwork it too much, I think the pillowcase stayed nice and painterly, I used a fair large bush, which helped...The rose petals work nicely, just smeared paint :) The leaves I'm a bit unsure about, there were certainly a few points in the process where they were becoming overworked...hopefully I've managed to pull it back. Need to hide it away for a few days before looking at it again, to know for sure...Anyway, I had a very enjoyable time working on it :)

Finger painting is good too ... are you using oils?

I really like the pillow case - the shadows in the creases - very Freud as you say.

If anything the rose seems too perfect - but maybe that's me liking the seamier side of life *-)

Thats very impressive....I like the choice of colours and the shadows.

Does this mean a regular daily offering from the house of Rice or are you a one-off wonder ;-];-]

Joking aside its always refreshing to paint outside your comfort zone from time to time and I probably paint at my best when there are literally hours rather than days to spare - which is a luxury you can have in acrylics. If I painted in oils I'd be buggered by now.....

Oils yes Lorna :) it was all getting very slippery by the time I finished…which was…interesting…usually the different layers have 24+ hours to dry, but here it was all done in 4 hours ish…

I know what you mean about the rose being too perfect Miss T (although I don’t think I would have used that word ;)). Freud seemly uses relatively little paint to achieve a very complete rendering of his subject. As that wasn’t entirely working for me I think I’ve added too many little brushstrokes which have help me to define the rose, but lost something of that Freudian magic…but then again, I’m not Freud, I’m just studying him :)

I think the chances of me painting a picture a day are slim Sue, I prefer taking my time, thoroughly getting into my subject. This was a very interesting exercise though…which would be good to repeat every now and then :) And your right about working to deadlines, they can be very helpful…One of the reasons I like the watercolours is because I’m out doing them onsite (I HATE the expression “En plein air”) I have to get them finished there and then…that forces me to work in a different way, which steadily seems to be taking the pictures in an interesting direction. :)

Anyway, with luck I’ll do a little work on “Jack” tonight, so hopefully something new to post later :)

Well... overworked or not, I think its a very sensuous painting and did you know that yellow roses signify steadfastness? And their leaves symbolize hope and optimism. There you go....learn something every day.....;-]
